Bacterial Outer Membrane

My dissertation focused on the mechanisms underlying the dynamic processes of prokaryotic cell membranes and how they contribute to bacterial survival.

The Gram negative bacterial cell envelope.

Outer Membrane Vesicles

Spherical structures called outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) derive from the cell envelope and entrap bacterial content.

Relevance and Applications

Pathogenic bacteria are still a cause of disease in the US. Understanding the process of OMV secretion, can lead to better antibiotics and identification of bacterial drug targets.

Biological Functions of OMVs

OMVs contribute to bacterial survival, nutrient acquisition, gene transfer, biofilm formation, quorum sensing, dissemination of virulence factors, and modulation of the host immune response.
